Privacy

Last updated October 3, 2026.

The Wire collects as little as it can: your email address, the name you give, and a record of what we sent you. This page says what is collected, where it is kept, and how to see it or have it removed.

What We Collect

When you subscribe. Your email address and the name you enter. The subscription starts only when you click the confirmation link we email you.

When we email you. Whether each email was delivered and opened, which links in it you clicked, and your answer if you use the feedback buttons at the foot of an email.

How you found us. The page you subscribed on and the site that sent you there. To work that out, your browser keeps a short list of the Wire pages you opened in that visit, 15 at most. The list stays in your browser unless you subscribe, and it is cleared when you close the tab.

When you visit. Page views are counted without cookies. Each one records the page, the site that referred you, your browser and device type, your browser’s language, and your country, which is worked out from your time zone. If you are signed in as a subscriber, the view is recorded against your subscription.

When you write to us. Your message and your email address. If you send a question, we may answer it in a briefing. We don’t publish your name, or anything that identifies you or your property, without asking you first.

What we don’t collect. The Wire holds no payment details, runs no advertising trackers and has no comment section.

Cookies and Browser Storage

Reading the Wire sets no cookies. If you sign in as a subscriber, one cookie keeps you signed in for up to six months. Links that leave the Wire tell the other site that you came from the Wire, and nothing more.

Why We Collect It

To send you the briefing and dispatches you asked for, to see which Wires are read so we can write more of what is useful, and to answer you when you write.

We don’t sell, rent or trade subscriber information. We don’t share the subscriber list with BCGroundwaterLicence.ca, BCWaterWell.com, ColleenRoberts.com or anyone else. If you follow a link to one of those sites and fill in a form there, that site’s own privacy terms apply.

Who Handles It for Us

  • Ghost runs the site, holds the subscriber list, sends the email and counts page views. Ghost says its servers are in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, that analytics data for the sites it hosts is stored in the European Union, and that some of its suppliers are in other countries. Your information is therefore stored outside Canada. See Ghost’s privacy policy.
  • Bunny Fonts supplies the site’s typefaces. It says it keeps no logs and does no tracking.
  • jsDelivr, a public content delivery network, delivers parts of the sign-up and search tools.
  • Google provides the mailbox that receives what you write to us.

How Long We Keep It

For as long as you subscribe. Unsubscribing stops the email at once; your record stays on file, marked unsubscribed, until you ask us to delete it. Ask, and we delete it within 30 days.

Your Choices

  • Unsubscribe. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and it works at once.
  • See or correct what we hold. Under British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act, you can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, how it has been used and who it has been given to, and you can ask us to correct it. We answer within 30 days.
  • Complain. Tell us first, so we can put it right. If you are not satisfied, you can go to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.
